Yunxi Manggu Tea House (Chengdu)

Design Theme: Cultural Commerce
Design Year: 2023 (AAD)
Architectural Materials: Bamboo, Stone, Glass Curtain Walls
Building Area: 600m²
Project Location: Chengdu
Project Involvement: As the lead designer, I completed the entire conceptual design of this project, which was endorsed by the team as the primary construction proposal.

Respecting the Site and Environment

This is a Demonstration Area Building situated in the Longquan forested mountains. A resort residential complex has been developed at the mountain peak, and this building serves functions such as exhibition space, a library, and a tea break area, aiming to become the spiritual stronghold of the resort area.

Wild Luxury

The building materials, consisting of locally sourced bamboo and stone, seamlessly blend into the environment, reflecting the architecture’s sense of place and cultural texture.

Mountain Living

The project is situated directly opposite the entrance to the resort, built around an ancient ginkgo tree atop the mountain, effectively integrating with the surrounding terrain while fulfilling its basic functions.

The extended, flowing glass skylights allow people at the foot of the mountain to easily notice this unique structure both during the day and at night.

1. Cluster

The cliffside residential cluster has issues: four buildings are closely grouped in the south, while one is isolated in the north. Adjustments can enhance their environmental interaction.

2. Flowline

The village entrance faces the Academy, adding a sense of ceremony. Adjustments will create a winding path, enhancing their connection and fostering a more secluded atmosphere.

3. Association

Tall pines obstruct the weak connection between the building and the ancient ginkgo. A platform can enhance interaction and create a viewing point.

4. Significance

The building sits in a mountain depression, obscuring it from East Road. Adjustments will make it visible from afar, transforming it into a landmark.

Enhanced Planning
Ancient ginkgo biloba, woods, distant mountains, and villages embody wild luxury; architecture must balance the hidden and the visible.
Entering the village, a winding path leads through a secluded area and into the building, creating a rich experience of movement.
The building's entrance space blends with the environment, while the ginkgo tree platform creates a dynamic relationship with the building's lower volume.
The first-floor volume of the building appears to float above the environment.
One side of the building volume is elevated over the ancient ginkgo, forming a two-story platform between the ginkgo and tall pines, providing space for climbing and mountain views.
The building's form twists to create favorable sightlines to the environment and the ancient ginkgo.
Visible: the crack reveals the glass material, drawing attention to the road at the foot of the mountain.
Hidden: three roofs emerge from nature, seemingly suspended in the environment.
